Comprehensive Psychoeducational Testing for Learning Disabilities

Guiding Children Toward Their Full Potential

Comprehensive and Targeted Testing for Learning Disabilities:

At Pasadena MindWorks, we provide in-depth learning disorder assessments for children and adolescents. Our goal is not only to identify conditions such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, or dyscalculia, but also to offer a deep understanding of each child’s unique cognitive and learning profile. We go beyond diagnosis to uncover meaningful insights into cognitive and emotional functioning, allowing us to create tailored recommendations that strengthen existing abilities and support areas of need.

Comprehensive:

We offer learning disability testing as part of our comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations, because learning difficulties often occur alongside other challenges such as ADHD, processing disorders, and mental‑health concerns like anxiety and depression. Targeted:

We also provide targeted learning disorder evaluations for families who prefer to focus the assessment on a specific academic concern. While targeted evaluations do not offer the same breadth of information as a full neuropsychological assessment—and may reveal the need for additional testing—they still provide the basis for diagnosing learning disorders, incorporating both cognitive and  psychoeducational testing.

Understanding Learning Disabilities in Children:

When Learning Doesn’t Come Easily

It can be incredibly difficult to watch your child’s confidence fade—especially when they are bright, curious, and capable, yet struggle with reading, writing, or math in ways that don’t make sense. Over time, the gap between your child’s potential and their academic performance can lead to frustration, low self‑esteem, and growing anxiety around school. A thorough evaluation helps identify the root causes behind these difficulties, providing clear answer and a personalized plan for effective interventions—so your child can regain confidence and experience lasting academic and emotional success.

Common Signs of Learning Disorders May Include:

  • Ongoing difficulty with reading, spelling, or writing compared to peers

  • Trouble understanding math concepts or completing calculations

  • Homework that takes far longer than expected

  • Teacher reports that your child is not working up to potential

  • Strong avoidance of reading or writing tasks

  • Difficulty organizing ideas for essays or longer responses

  • Frustration or emotional outbursts during schoolwork

  • Challenges learning the alphabet, rhyming, or connecting sounds to letters

  • Complaints that reading feels hard, or frequent misreading of simple words

  • Messy handwriting or difficulty spacing letters and words

  • Struggles to express ideas on paper, with weak spelling or grammar

  • Difficulty memorizing math facts or grasping multi‑step concepts

  • Significant homework stress, sometimes leading to avoidance or meltdowns

Our Targeted Learning Disorders Evaluation Approach

  • A detailed conversation with parents or guardians to understand your child’s personal history, developmental milestones, and current challenges, and to clarify your concerns and assessment goals.

  • A thorough review of school records, relevant medical records, and any previous evaluations.

  • Collection of rating scales from multiple perspectives (e.g., self-report, parents, teachers) to understand how symptoms present across different settings.

  • Direct, one-on-one testing to assess intellectual abilities across a range of cognitive domains.

  • Direct, one-on-one testing of academic skills including reading fluency and comprehension, written expression, and math calculation and reasoning

  • A comprehensive meeting with parents or guardians to review findings, discuss diagnoses (if applicable), and go over individualized recommendations.
